When it comes to getting paid in the film business, the last person on the list is usually the independent filmmaker. For filmmakers of course this is a travesty of justice, since they do most of the work and sometimes films get made but never get distributed. The Filmmakers Channel is a project that seeks to remedy all of this by providing services that get films to the audience directly and pay the filmmaker first.
Audience Direct Distribution of Independent Films & Media
The Filmmakers Channel was the brainchild of Anthony Dellaflora and yours truly, Daniel Latrimurti.
After 26 years as a journalist for the Albuquerque Journal, Anthony embarked on an independent filmmaking career. To date he not only has produces a number of acclaimed independent films but also the founded of the Duke City Shootout, the first filmmaking festival where filmmakers would submit a script to be judged with the winners being flown in to shoot their films over a 7 day period which would be submitted and shown during the festival.
As a website project The Filmmakers Channel is notable because the WordPress theme was a custom theme development project with the intention of being used to enable filmmakers a film, or video specific platform from which to market their creative work.
Project Background and Scope
The Filmmakers Channel was the natural consequence of a distribution effort for Tony’s film “High Strange New Mexico”, a film about New Mexico UFO folklore. The film was sitting around gathering dust, when Tony and I put up a website, set it up with a PPV player called Maxcast (which bit the dust later) and did a press release. Within 2 weeks Tony received a telephone call from UFO TV with a distribution offer and off to the races we went. The original idea was to use the Maxcast player but just as things looked to be getting started Maxcast ran into problems. Which of course The Filmmakers Channel also ran into problems.
- WordPress Website; The theme is built on the Genesis theme framework by Studio Press and has seen further life as an all purpose WordPress theme ideally suited for any business or individual who wants to bring into focus video based marketing and you will see the theme applied to other customer projects as well.
- Custom WordPress Plug Ins: Part of the project was to develop two custom WordPress plugins. The “Adopt a Film” supporting viral sharing of films content and DIY Distribution in support of linking to Pay Per View and DVD purchase links. However these plugins were built to accommodate the use of the Maxcast Pay Per View solution and when Maxcast subsided into the background it took the wind out of the sales of these two plug ins.
- HTML5 Mobile Web App: The app was an after the fact add on and it’s development is in flux as is the entire project.
The Filmmakers Channel will ride again and is currently being reinvented around the use of the mobile app as the distribution model for films and a new Pay Per View Plug In. Stay tuned. Especially if you’re a filmmaker.
